Very small, curated community posting thoughtful political, general, arts, gaming, etc news (specifically not just tech and “nerd” focused) that has some level of commenting functionality? I LOVE hackernews but I am finding that I really don’t get a lot of non-tech news here (and I understand that is the point) and so I am looking for something to replace Reddit, TikTok, and google news at getting regular stories. Some things I have tried: RSS feeds: don’t really see a practical benefit to this over google news Google News: want to get away from it as I am trying to excommunicate Google from my life as much as possible, and it misses the comment functions Apple News: not happy I have to pay money for half of it, and the other problem I have is I could give a rats ass about their “curated” stories and audio news. Reddit: generally, too mainstream and filled with a bunch of chaff I don’t really want to sift through to get to the nuggets, when the nuggets are quite common on here TikTok: the world news I have gotten on here is great! But often filled with other videos that distract me or are not something I want to actively fill my time with Thoughts? If this doesn’t exist, would people be interested in it being created, and does anyone think it has a chance of taking off (and not immediately falling to the slop that is public Internet forums)?

Hi yall! I've been using hacker news for a while but one of the things I started wanting recently was the ability to have alerts for any stories I post. The thing that pushed me over the edge was Hackclub's shipwrecked https://ift.tt/CBTp5dj (hackathon in the boston bay for anyone that can make 4 projects over the summer and get at least one of them to go viral). One of the options for "going viral" was to get to the front page of hacker news but I was constantly scared that I would miss it getting on there lol so I whipped up a quick slackbot to send alerts to a channel. It was dead simple but it did work. Once I had the bot I realized I could do wayyyy more with the data I was collecting so I decided to add some historical data initially thinking I would generate graphs and then embed them in the message but decided to quickly try using Bun.serve to host a quick dashboard mainly since I wanted to see how the developer experience was. Spoiler it is amazing. I've gotten really inspired by web components and the idea of only using universally supported `html`, `css`, and `js`. Bun results in an amazingly nice developer experience where you can just import the `index.html` and assign it to your root route and be done. Sorry for shilling about bun but it truly was one of my favorite parts of building this besides drizzle. The dashboard has a graph of the points earned and position on the leaderboard over time (updated every 5 minutes) and then the expected stats like peak points, peak position, author, and comment count. Also btw all the code is open source ofc on both my tangled repo ( https://ift.tt/iSuhlRV ) as well as a github repo ( https://ift.tt/6C5kRj4 ) and you can try the hosted version at https://hn.dunkirk.sh I'm planning to add the ability to just install the slackbot to any workspace and have workspace specific leaderboards but that will require a bit of refactoring and probably abandoning the slack-edge package. It's been 2 years since the initial release [here]( https://ift.tt/p2KobDe ). The initial version was a very basic prototype which was not available anywhere beyond the GitHub repo. You had to install it as a userscript or load the extension manually. Since then, it remained simple but better, new features include: - Improved accuracy by also using comments to help gauge the topic of discussion and the right keywords. - Published as plugin for more browsers: Chrome, Firefox (including android), and more recently Microsoft Edge. - Support for narrow screens and mobile devices. - Added preference controls. You're here because you love interesting HN discussions but they're often buried away like hidden gems, so give it a try and let me know what you think.

I built this because HN is woefully underfeatured, but most sites that try to improve it seem to assume that the visual design is the problem. hcker.news tries to maintain HN's familiarity while adding useful enhancements. There are three primary views: - Timeline View: Browse top stories by votes or comments grouped by day, week, or month (e.g., top 20 per day, top 100 per week). - Aggregate View: See top stories by votes or comments over custom time ranges. - Front Page View: The original HN front page, untouched. Feed Filtering: - Custom Keyword Filters: Include/exclude keywords (e.g., include "Rust," exclude "DOGE") or set a minimum score threshold. - No HN Algorithm: Timeline and Aggregate Views show stories usually downranked by the HN algo (e.g., flagged posts or those with too many comments). Hey HN! I'm excited to share a tool I've been working on - a native Hacker News reader built with Rust and egui. Here's a screenshot: https://ift.tt/MVzKCmT... . As a daily HN reader, I've always struggled with keeping track of interesting posts I want to read later. Browser tabs pile up, bookmarks get forgotten, and I lose track of what I've already read. I needed a way to: 1. Browse HN efficiently (across all sections - hot, new, show, ask, jobs, best) 2. Quickly mark posts as "todo" for later reading 3. Mark posts as "done" when finished 4. Filter and search effectively I couldn't find a tool that combined all these features, so I built one. It's been tremendously helpful for my own HN reading workflow, and I thought others might find it useful too. Features: - *Integrated todo tracking*: Mark stories as "todo" and "done" to manage your reading progress - *Search functionality*: Filter stories by keyword in title, domain, or author - *Multiple sections*: Browse all HN sections (hot, new, show, ask, jobs, best) - *Threaded comments*: View comments in a Reddit-like threaded format - *Dark/light mode*: Easy on the eyes in any environment - *Keyboard shortcuts*: Efficient navigation with keyboard-centric design (1-6 for tabs, Ctrl+F for search) - *Auto-loading*: Automatically loads more content when scrolling - *Color-coding*: Stories color-coded by score for easy scanning - *Native app*: Fast, responsive, and works offline with local caching Built with Rust and the egui UI framework, with SQLite for local storage. The app scrapes Hacker News HTML directly rather than using the official API to capture the full story context. Instead of building forms, the survey creator just writes what they want to learn and AI takes it from there, chatting with respondents to get meaningful answers. To show how it works, I’ve created a short demo survey with the question in the title. The idea is for you to try it out and see the respondent experience, which is really the core of the innovation. I’d love to get your answers and your feedback. The survey is open to the first 100 completed responses (or fewer, if too many people start it and I need to rein in LLM costs).
